There are 3 distinct phases of exam development. First is the Job Task Analysis. This phase consists of a subject matter expert (SME) workshop and worldwide survey. The workshop was just completed on Friday, August 22nd. The goal of the workshop is to identify the skills and knowledge necessary to perform the duties required of an entry-level PC support and service technician. Because CompTIA is ANSI/ISO accredited, we must regularly review the job task analysis to ensure its relevancy and currency to the industry. Once the workshop is complete, the newly created “blueprint” or rough draft of the new objectives is disseminated in a worldwide survey. The purpose of the survey is to validate what the SME workshop developed, particularly around the concepts of frequency and importance. In other words, we ask as many people as we can, “How important is it for an A+ certified technician to know such-and-such?” and “How frequently would an A+ certified technician perform this particular task?” The results of the survey are analyzed by our psychometrician and his analysis results in the objectives document that defines what is covered on the exam.
For me, this first phase is the most exciting. Through the course of managing the certification, I receive tons of statistical and anecdotal feedback about the exam, the objectives, and the questions. The first phase of the development cycle is when I get an opportunity to see that feedback funneled en masse to help create an updated version. The goal with each exam update is to continually improve upon the certification exam.
After the objectives are created and validated, the second phase, Item Writing, begins. This phase also begins with a SME workshop. The goal of this workshop is to write the actual exam items that will eventually make up the newest version of A+. If you’re interested in participating, keep an eye out for a call for SMEs to be issued soon. I anticipate the Item Writing Workshop to take place this November. In this workshop, the SMEs are trained in item writing, given a library of resources, and type frantically for 5 days. Once the workshop is complete, those newly written questions must be beta tested. If you’ve taken a CompTIA exam recently, you may have noticed a disclaimer at the start of the exam that indicates you may encounter unscored items on your exam. Unscored items are one way CompTIA beta tests new questions. As more and more people are exposed to a particular question, data is collected on the performance of that question. This data is extremely important for the final stage of development.
